Richard Herrera, is beginning his 31st year in music education. Mr. Herrera comes to Brandeis High School from Warren High School where he spent six years developing one of the finest 5A bands in NISD. Prior to his tenure at Warren, Herrera was director of bands with the Brownfied Independent School District.
A native of El Paso, Herrera graduated from E.P. Jefferson HS in 1979. He then went to West Texas State University where he earned his Bachelor of Music Education (1983), and Master of Arts (1984). In 2009, Mr. H earned a Master of Education in Administration from Lamar University.
Mr. Herrera has had both marching and concert bands rank top 5 in the state in Rankin and Brownfield. In 1992-94, the Brownfield HS Marching Band, under the direction of Mr. Herrera, won the 3A UIL State Marching Contest.
In 1992, Mr. Herrera was honored with the Certificate of Marching Excellence given by the National Band Association. Mr. Herrera has been named to Who's Who Among America's Teachers in 1996, 2000, 2004, and 2006. Mr. H was named Teacher of the Year for the Warren Fine Arts Department in 2005-2006 and in 2006-2007. Mr. Herrera was a finalist for the UIL Sponsor of Excellence award in 2007 and 2012.
The Warren Band has received a first divsion at the UIL Region Marching Contest every year since the school opened in the Fall of 2002 and has advanced to the UIL Area Marching Contest every eligible year of competition. The Concert Bands have received the UIL Sweepstakes trophy the last three years. In 2007, the Warren Band received "The President's Cup" at the Battle of Bands and won first place in the Public School's section at the Battle of Flowers Fiesta Parade.
The Brandeis Bronco Band received a first division at the UIL Region Marching Contest and advanced to the UIL Area Marching Contest coming in 25th place out of 34 5A High School Bands. The "Spirit of Brandeis" accomplished this goal in October of it's inaugural year in 2008. The Bronco Band has won a first division at the UIL Region Marching Contest every year since the school opened in the Fall of 2008. In 2010, the marching band placed 14th place out of 31 5A bands at the UIL Area Marching Contest. The Brandeis Band has won the coveted UIL Sweepstakes Award in 2009 through 2012. The "Spirit of Brandeis" Marching Band won first place at the Fiesta Battle of Flowers Parade in April 2010 and second place in 2012. The Bronco Band also won second place at the Battle Of Bands Festival in 2012.
Mr. Herrera has served as TMEA Region 16 President, ATSSB Region 16 Band Chair, TBA Region 11 Representative and TMEA Region 11 Band Chair. Mr. H served as the Fine Arts Coordinator for Warren High School. Mr. H was appointed to the Board of Directors to the Texas Bandmasters Association (TBA) six years ago and currently serves as Immediate Past President.
Mr. Herrera's professional affliations include: Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, National Band Association, Phi Beta Mu, Texas Music Adjudicators Association and Association of Texas Small School Bands.
Mr. Herrera is married to Lucinda, his wife of 22 years. They have a 15 year old son named Baylor who plays the trombone at Brandeis High School.
