Noticed some changes in the library? We have gotten the year off to a great start with a new layout, new furniture, and mural work to brighten the learning environment. For those of you who have not met me yet, my name is Mrs. Flippen and I am thrilled to be your child’s librarian! I have been in the education field for over 11 years, and seven of those have been here in Northside ISD. I received a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies with a concentration in reading, as well as a Master of Arts in Administration with a concentration in Organizational Development from the University of the Incarnate Word. Most recently, I obtained my school librarian certification from the University of North Texas.
After leaving the classroom and San Antonio ISD, I came to NISD as a reading pull-out teacher at the middle school level, helping struggling students pass the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS). After working at the secondary level, I decided to come back to the elementary level and worked as a reading and math Academic Support Teacher and a Gifted and Talented Specialist. Now, I am so excited to continue this journey as a librarian, alongside the wonderful staff, students, and parents of Carlos Coon Elementary.
About the Library
The new layout of the library includes an easy non-fiction and PreK section located at the far end of the library, as well as a reference section dedicated to student research, and a parent section for locating materials to help with special issues at home among other things.
The library is open before school Monday through Friday from 7:15 am to 7:40 am, and after school Tuesday through Friday from 2:45 pm to 3:15 pm. Students are allowed to visit the library after school as long as they are with a parent or teacher. Students in kinder and first grade are allowed to check out one book at a time, while students in second through fifth grade are able to check out two books. Our campus will continue to offer the Accelerated Reader (AR) and Texas Bluebonnet Award (TBA) programs, providing students the opportunity to improve their comprehension skills and hopefully foster a love of reading.
I am looking forward to working with all of the children this year and letting them experience how many wonderful resources our library has to offer!
