Mrs. Mary Helen Cover, PrincipalDriggers Connected---This is the beginning of our 7th year at Rita Kay Driggers Elementary School- Home of the Basset Hounds- Great Students-Great Teachers/Staff -Great Namesake- Mrs Rita Kay Driggers---Where Readers are Leaders!

When you enter our school you may notice the gorgeous mural hanging above our library. Our namesake, Mrs. Rita Kay Driggers , TCU graduate, who is a retired NISD teacher and librarian, donated this magnificent work of art painted by local San Antonio artist, Shawn Bridges. Students love when Mrs. Driggers visits to share her expertise in books and her passion for reading.

Thank You, Mrs. Driggers for all that you do for our students!

As the year begins, it is our pleasure to have you as our parents and community members. We are in the heart of the City of Leon Valley and we appreciate all of the City's support as well as our own City of San Antonio support throughout the years with all of our endeavors! We are always striving to provide the very best education there is to all of our students.

We are a Title I, Bilingual Elementary School PK-5. Our Focus for this 2013-2014 school year is: Family, Friendly- Safe School,  College & Career Readiness/STAAR Readiness, AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination), Parental/Community Involvement and Technology.  Together we achieve more and our staff is delighted to  have your children begin another exciting  year focusing on all of the  TEKS ( Texas Essential Knowledge of Skills) especially the Readiness/Supporting Standards from STAAR.  All of our hard working Teachers are "Highly Qualified" and have been trained via exceptional staff development/ workshops that Driggers, NISD and other educational entities provide to help students succeed.

We "Thank" our outstanding Driggers P.T.A.  the P.T.A. Board, headed again this year by Mrs. Michelle Hanover, Business/Community Partners and our Volunteers/Mentors for all of their support with our endeavors.  Please don't forget to joing our Driggers PTA!    Comng soon is our 2nd Annual - Howlin'Hound Fall Festival -mark your calendars now for  November 1st  from 5 to 8 pm.  We had a marvelous turn out and our community connected for a great time for kids.  Thanks to all of our supporters and we hope to see you again this year!  More information will be forthcoming!

I attended the University of Texas at Austin with a major in Spanish, History and Mathematics (/UT/UTSA). As a Principal, one of my main roles is to be the Instructional Leader of the school.  Whenever the opportunity presents itself, visiting and teaching math is where you will find me-and students can see me in a different role - one that I cherished so much while teaching at Hobby M.S.   We are emphasizing reading, math, writing and science/social studies at all grade levels but in a more rigorous and differentiated way to meet the needs of each child.   I  am very proud to serve this great district under the direction of our wonderful Superintendent, Dr. Brian Woods.  Driggers Welcomes Dr. Woods and the hard working -focused NISD School Board- both are fantastic leaders- who have high expectations of all staff, students and community stakeholders to help our students succeed in all endeavors!

My husband, Mr. Cover, was formerly the Principal of Leon Valley Elementary for 11 wonderful years! We have two children which are products of this great district-Northside I.S.D.  -one is a teacher/coach and the other is beginning the University Adventure! Our loving Basset Hound, Anna Belle IV, adoringly nicknamed “Annie",also happens to be our school mascot. The Basset Hound is a very loyal, inquisitive and loving animal that has great stamina!  The Basset Hound was said to have come to the United States when Marquis De Lafayette brought the hound  to President George Washington as a gift.

As an administrator, and in keeping with our NISD Pillars of Character, we strive to help students achieve their goals and become responsible, caring, trustworthy and well educated individuals. As you can see from our Mission Statement below, we truly have a positive learning environment at Rita Kay Driggers Elementary.
