 A Word from the Nurse

The School nurse administers first aid only. She does not diagnose illnesses, but takes note of symptoms and notifies the parents of her observations. We ask that children be kept at home when ill. They should have a normal temperature for 24 hours after any illness before returning to school. This is important for the health of the child and for the health of all children at the school.

Medication Administration at School

For the protection of all students, NISD has very strict rules regarding medication to be given at school. (See NISD website for more details)

  • Physician orders are needed for any medication dispensed at school. Medication administration forms are available in the school clinic or on the NISD website.
  • Students are not allowed to carry with them any cold medications, cough drops, throat lozenges, vitamins or herbal remedies.
  •  All medication should be delivered to the clinic or to the office by an adult. Parents should report to the clinic any time they come to give their child medication at school.
  • Parents are also responsible for picking up medications. For the safety of your child and other children, medications will not be sent home with the child.

Hello my name is Kathryn Cruz, and I am the school nurse for Driggers Elementary! I was born and raised in Corpus Christi, Texas. I earned my Bachelor's Degree in Biology from The University of Texas at San Antonio and my Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. I was very fortunate to have worked for two amazing hospitals. After graduating from nursing school, I worked on the Janey Briscoe Children's Unit at University Hospital for almost 4 years and then at Methodist Children's Hospital on the Pediatric Surgical unit for 2 years. I have always had a passion for helping others and enjoy working with children. Children are so resilient and they never cease to amaze me. Nursing has truly been very rewarding and I continue to learn from all my little ones everyday.

I have a wonderful husband and two beautiful children who are my pride & joy. I enjoy spending time with my family and friends!

I am looking forward to sharing a wonderful year with you and your children! Please feel free to contact me at any time with any questions, concerns or suggestions.
