About Us...

Welcome to 7th Grade Reading

From Ms. Smelser...

Greetings Patriots! Red, white, and blue are the best colors, and as a graduate of the University of Arizona (Go Wildcats!) in Tucson, Arizona, I have been wearing them for many years. I look forward to pumping up your reading, critical thinking, and research skills to ensure success in everything you do in your educational career.

This is my twenty-ninth year teaching and my 8th year teaching  seventh grade reading classes. Before teaching reading, I taught English for 20 years! We have an ambitious reading curriculum this year filled with many different activities designed to challenge all levels of readers and thinkers. I love to read and write, and I hope to instill some of that love into you. Reading a good mystery/suspense novel on the beach or by the pool is one of my favorite things to do. I also love most sports, but baseball and softball are my absolute favorites! I have two children – Carly, 24, a teacher at Holmes High School, and Nick, 22, a senior at Texas State where he is a student baseball coach.

From Ms. Edge...

Greetings everyone!  I look forward to an awesome year at Rawlinson Middle School.

I have been in education for 22 years--17 years teaching both reading and English in middle and high schools, two years as an academic coordinator at a high school, and 3 1/2 years writing state assessments. I spent 7 of those 21 years teaching middle school in Colorado.  I love to read and we have some great selections to dive into for this year.

I helped raise three energetic boys and now have six wonderful grandchildren--five of which are under the age of five.  I also have an 11 year old labrador retrievor that you will probably hear me talk about often.

I'm excited about the year and look forward to getting to know everyone.

Both, Ms. Smelser and Ms. Edge are available before and after school by appointment and from 8:30-9:15 AM. You can reach Ms. Smelser at 397-4900 ext. 3225. You can reach Ms. Edge at 397-4900 ext. 3224.
