My name is Tonya Almaraz, and I am the Vice Principal at Helotes Elementary. This year marks the beginning of my 22nd year of service in public education. I am proud and honored to be part of Helotes Elementary, a school rich in history and traditions.
I received my Bachelors of Science in Physical Education from Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas and my Masters of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. I also attended Schreiner University in Kerrville, Texas where I completed my coursework to attain my Principal Certification. My other certifications include: All-Level Physical Education and Elementary Education Grades 1 through 8.
Prior to coming to Helotes Elementary I wore many teaching hats! My teaching experience includes teaching and coaching at the high school level and teaching elementary physical education. I have also taught 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th grade. I spent nine years of my career as a Campus Instructional Coordinator and 1 year as an Academic Support Teacher in the area of reading. Over the years and in the different roles I have played I believe the following:
I believe that ALL children can learn
I believe that student failure is not an option
I believe that high expectations for ALL children is non-negotiable
I believe that children should be treated and taught as if they were your own
I was born and raised in the great State of Texas. All my teaching experience has been in San Antonio, Texas. I have been married to my awesome husband for 20 years and we have two beautiful children.
I look forward to serving the Helotes community. As I said before, I am proud and honored to be part of Helotes Elementary.
