AU-Charlotte Forrest

Welcome to the Specialized Instruction Autism Classroom

My name is Charlotte Forrest and I am the Specialized Instruction Autism teacher here at Murray E. Boone Elementary. This is my fourth year at Boone, as the autism teacher and my fifth year teaching.  In my spare time I enjoy reading, cross-stitching and working on things for my students.

I wanted to take a moment and share with you that we are still looking for parents to join our PTA. The dues are only $7.00 per person and you do not have to committ to doing anything. PTA uses the funds earned through memberships to help pay for programs like field trips, music programs, art programs, bike rodeo and movie night (just ot name a few). So, if you have not already done so, please join the PTA.

I also want to take a moment and share some ideas that can help bridge the gap between home and school. It is  important to keep working on generalizing the skills your child has learned at school. Starfall (www.starfall.com) is wonderful for keeping up with reading skills. In the area of math you can work on vocabulary for positions. Practice putting objects below, above, next to, on top of, etc. Focus on before, after, and the sequence of events. For instance, before we eat the cereal we first have to have a bowl and spoon, then we pour the cereal, then we eat the cereal. For writing skills, have your child sit at the table and use their finger to write letters in the blob of cool whip you put in front of them. You will be amazed at what they learn and it is fun for the whole family. In the area of science, let them help cook dinner. In the area of social studies, talk to your child about the difference in the things that occur at home and the things that occur in the community. For instance, at home we do not have to wear our shoes, but when we are in the community we do. The idea is that learning can be fun and enjoyable for everyone.

Please do not hesitate to contact me with questions or concerns. You may contact me at 397-1450 ext. 3130 or CLICK HERE to email me.  My conference time this year will be from 2:00-2:40 pm and my lunch from 12:45 - 1:15 pm.
