Meet the GT Teacher
My name is Elizabeth Bumgarner. I welcome you to the McDermott GT web page. This is my ninth year to teach GT and my seventh year at McDermott. I graduated from UTSA with a B.A. in Education with a minor in Early Childhood and Bilingual, and a M.A. in Educational Leadership. My situation is unique in that I have the opportunity to work with my students for six years --that creates a close bond and enables me to see how students change and grow. I am passionate about teaching kids to think and reason. When I am not teaching I am usually busy with my three children and their many activities. I love to spend time with my kids, travel, read, garden, and outdoor activities- fishing, camping, and hiking. My extended family also includes Bailey and Kady- sisters that are part lab and beagle. Oh, I almost forgot to mention our cat-Picolo.
The goal of the GT program is to provide instruction that is differentiated for the individual, and that engages each student in an enriched learning experience that exceeds the limits of the regular classroom. I am responsible for screening, testing, and teaching kindergarten through fifth grade students at McDermott who are identified as gifted and talented. The curriculum is a living, changing entity which relies upon the synergy of a free-thinking, high expectation, limitless atmosphere of learning that honors affective growth. Our theme this year is “Exploration.”
What kid doesn't want to lead the life of an Explorer? This year's unit of study is Exploration. We will be investigating explorers of our world and examining the internal and external conflicts involved with their explorations. Students will be participating in a variety of projects, including video production and independent research. Together, we will "imagine, discover, explore and believe" that anything is possible in ALPHA!
I am very excited to have your child in my G/T class. I am anticipating a great year. I want you to feel free to contact me anytime you wish through an e-mail: firstname.lastname@example.org or by calling the school at 397-5100 ext 3105.
