The Vocal Music Department at Clark High School is made up of about 210 students enrolled in 7 performing ensembles. The choirs are the Tenor-Bass, Treble, Advanced Treble, Chorale Men, Chorale Women, Concert Chorale and the Small Vocal Ensemble. Enrollment in the Tenor-Bass and the Treble Choirs is open to all students. Admission to the advanced ensembles is determined by audition. The Concert Season includes 4 major concerts, a "Pop Show," a musical theater production, bi-annual out of state trips and opportunities to compete for TMEA/UIL regional and state honors.
Accomplishments for recent years include consistent ‘Sweepstakes’ and ‘Superior’ ratings at UIL Concert/Sight–Reading Contest and the prestigious American Classic Madrigal Festival, producing the musicals “Fiddler on the Roof,” "Les Miserables," "Disney's Beauty & Beast," and "Pirates of Penzance," many students selected for the Texas All-State Choirs and many students recognized as TMEA Region Choir members and UIL Solo Contest. Clark vocalists were showcased as a part of WOAI-TV’s ‘San Antonio Living’ and ‘Sounds of the Season’ programs, FOX NEWS 'Holiday Music' program, KENS-5’s community features for “Fiddler,” sang at the annual Clark vs. Churchill 'Gucci Bowl' and various other community and athletic events, and performed in the closing galas of the 2006 and 2009 Texas Association of School Boards Convention and the 2007 Northside Educational Foundations Partnership Banquet. The Clark Concert Chorale performed as a demonstration choir at the TMEA Convention in 2009 featuring the music of composer/arranger Nick Page.
Recent travel experience includes performing at Disney's Epcot Center in Orlando, Florida for the "Disney Magic Music Days" and were recently featured at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York, NY.
James Hare is currently completing his 8th year as Director of Choirs at Tom Clark High School and his 20th year as a music educator. James graduated from Texas Tech University in 1993, earning a Bachelor of Music in Music Education and Vocal Performance and completing additional coursework toward a Master of Music in Choral Conducting. He has studied Christian Education at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and Educational Leadership at the University of Texas at San Antonio.
James currently serves the Texas Music Educators Association as the Region XI Vice President. He has filled various roles at both the region and state levels, including serving at the Vocal Division Chair, working as the Region XI HS Vocal Clinic/Concert Organizer, Audition and Clinic/Concert Host, UIL HS Vocal Contest Host, Audition Tabulations Chair, Region Handbook Review Committee, and HS Treble Music Selection Committee. Additional areas of service include stints on the TMEA Convention Registration and Facilities Teams, Clinic Host and Presider, and most recently as a Section Leader for the 2008 All-State Mixed Choir.
Choirs under James’ direction have performed at national Music Festivals in Colorado Springs, Dallas, Houston, New York, Orlando, San Antonio and Cozumel, Mexico. He is active as a judge and clinician of vocal music in Texas schools. His professional affiliations include membership in the Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Choral Directors Association and Texas Music Adjudicators Association.
James is an active member of Grace Point Church in San Antonio. He is married to Kelly. They have four beautiful daughters (Kayla, Lauren, Shanna and Sarah) and a son (James Christopher).
