Welcome to the Thornton Library!

My name is Mrs. Decker, and this is my 6th year as the library media specialist. I attended Abilene Christian University and received my Bachelors degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from University of Texas in San Antonio. I taught in Northside  for 15 years prior to getting my Masters degree in Library Science from University of North Texas and becoming a library media specialist. I taught 2nd grade, 3rd grade, and 4th grade, so teaching is my top priority in the library. Students come to the library for lessons and research projects throughout the year. Learning in the library goes on every day! A love of reading is also a primary goal for the Thornton library program. Students are encouraged to love reading through story time and reading programs. I look forward to seeing you in the library!

Library Classes & Checkout

Many are unaware that the library is not only a place for checking out books, but also a place for valuable learning. Students in all grades visit the library for quality lessons that are tied to the NISD curriculum. Each class also completes a research project that requires students to use print and electronic sources to find information, take notes, organize the information, and present the research in a meaningful way. The library is a busy place!

In kinder, students may check out 1 book at each visit to the library. In grades 1-5, students may check out 2 books during each visit. All students may keep their books for 1week before either renewing the book, or turning the book into the library. Students are able to come to the library with their class, or independently throughout the day with their teacher's permission. Students may also come to the library some days before school or after school with a parent. I invite all parents to sign up for a library account that will allow you to check out 5 books at a time for a period of 2 weeks.

We have an exciting new book donation program at Thornton!  You can make a book or monetary donation in honor of your child's birthday. You can make a donation by using the Birthday Bookclub link on the right side of the webpage. Your child will be honored on the Birthday Book Club wall in the library and on the morning announcements as he or she presents the donated book to the Thornton Library. The donated books will be a special part of the Thornton library collection for years to come! Please help our school promote literacy while honoring your child by participating in the Birthday Book Club!

Accelerated Reader (AR)

This is our first year to do Accelerated Reader. AR is a program that allows students in grades 2-5 to read books, take quizzes on the computer, and earn prizes throughout the year. Use the link on the right of this webpage to find out more about this wonderful program that promotes a love for reading as well as great comprehension skills.

Library Volunteers

The library cannot run smoothly without the help of volunteers!  I desperately need volunteers to shelve books, make copies, and help with various projects. If you are interested in volunteering in the library, please use the link below to email me.
