Art-Kerstan Copeland

Art is Life! Welcome to Art at Westwood Terrace!

This is a portrait a girl drew in my class. My name is Kerstan Copeland.  I am proud to be the art teacher of the fantastic students at WWT.  I look forward to working with the students and families of this class as we blaze a trail of success during the 2014-2015 school year!

A little about me: I graduated from New Braunfels High School in 1988.  I am a veteran of the United States Marine Corps.  I studied Anthropology and Art atTexas State University (it was called Southwest Texas back when I was there).  I am certified as an EC-12 Art Teacher, EC-4 Generalist (early childhood through 4th grade), and ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher.
This is my 11th year teaching. I've taught on the Southside of San Antonio, in New Braunfels, and now I'm here at Northside ISD!
I have a wonderful family: my wife works for Communities in Schools. My son is a sophomore and my daughter is in 8th grade.
I LOVE this job!  I get to make a difference each and every day I come to work.  Of all the things I've ever done in my life, teaching is the best (and most challenging) endeavor I've ever undertaken.
Miscellaneous Information About Me:  I love playing chess!  I've run chess clubs at most of the schools I taught at.  I am an avid model painter.  I spend hours painting miniature army men with my son (mostly for the strategy gameWarhammer 40,000 which we play).  I am a die-hard New England Patriotsfootball fan (I spent my childhood in New England).  I am a big fan of the local Americana music scene... especially the Band Cross Canadian Ragweed!  I love drawing with my pen-and-ink set and painting with my airbrush.  I read constantly!  I am the cook in my family and I specialize in making Italian food!  The thing I miss most about the Marine Corps is parachuting.  My favorite book is the Lord of the Rings and my favorite movie is the Committments!  I used to fence in college.   The best job I've ever had:teacher!  :)

When I was a kid I loved art. It was what I was most excited about every day as I headed off to school. Art had it's hooks in me and made me WANT to go to school. Now I am a teacher and I have worked hard to instill the same love of art into my students.
